RECIPE: AFFOGATO AL CAFFÈ

 

Affogato al caffè literally means “drowned” – and that’s exactly what this delightful Italian dessert is. Smooth vanilla ice cream melting under a shot of hot, freshly brewed espresso. Simple ingredients, pure flavors, and the option to elevate it with your favorite toppings. Perfect after a meal – or as a quick treat on a warm summer day.

 

Ingredients

Classic Affogato

1–2 scoops of vanilla ice cream (or gelato)
1 shot (about 30–50 ml) freshly brewed strong coffee
Optional toppings:

Grated dark chocolate or chocolate shavings
A splash of liqueur (e.g., Amaretto or Baileys)
Chopped nuts (e.g., hazelnuts or pistachios)
Cocoa powder or cinnamon for topping
 
Instructions

Brew the coffee just before serving so it’s piping hot.
Place the ice cream in a glass (preferably a footed one) or a small bowl.
Pour the hot espresso directly over the ice cream.
Add your favorite toppings and serve immediately – enjoy!

Want your Affogato fully plant-based? Choose these ingredients:

Vegan vanilla ice cream – ideally oat-, almond-, or coconut-based
Dark chocolate free from dairy
Replace liqueur with non-alcoholic almond syrup
Sprinkle with nuts or cacao nibs for crunch
